Legacy FDA category D. Benzodiazepine: use for status epilepticus when needed — benefit outweighs risk; neonatal sedation or withdrawal if used near term.

Single doses are compatible; observe the infant for sedation.

Clinical notes

Buccal or intranasal midazolam is at least as effective as rectal diazepam and easier to give. Count every benzodiazepine dose given before arrival.

Adult and adolescent (≥40 kg) dose

10 mg — Single dose buccal, intranasal or IM; may repeat once (max 10 mg per dose).
